What you get

I got tired of guessing whether I was getting ahead. My accounts lived in five different apps, and none of them added up the whole picture. So I built one sheet: you list your accounts once, type each balance on the same day every month, and the totals, the change since last month, the mix of assets and debts and the charts fill in by themselves. It takes about five minutes a month.

What's inside (6 tabs)

• Start here: setup in 5 steps, how to open it in Google Sheets
• Setup: currency ($, €, £, CA$, A$), starting month and year, 24 or 36 months, an optional net worth goal and target date, and your account list: up to 25 assets (Cash, Investments, Retirement, Property, Vehicle, Other) and up to 20 debts (Mortgage, Student loan, Car loan, Credit card, Other). Rename the types if you like
• Balances: one row per account, one column per month, so you type each balance once
• Summary: month by month, total assets, total liabilities, net worth, change vs last month, % change, assets by type, debt by type and your debt-to-asset ratio
• Goal: progress toward your goal, average monthly change, months to goal at your current pace and the amount you'd need per month to hit your target date
• Dashboard: your latest numbers plus 4 charts: net worth over time, assets vs liabilities, asset mix (donut) and debt mix (donut)

How it works

1. In Setup, pick your currency and starting month and list your assets and debts, each with a type from the drop-down.
2. Once a month, type what each account is worth or what you owe on the Balances tab. Leave future months empty.
3. Open the Summary, Goal and Dashboard tabs. The totals, the pace and the charts are already there.

Colors and files

You get 4 files: the same tracker in 3 color themes (Lavender, Blush, Sage), ready to use and empty, plus one EXAMPLE file with 36 months of sample numbers so you can see every feature at work.

Compatibility

• .xlsx for Microsoft Excel 2016 or newer (Windows, Mac, Excel online) and Google Sheets (free Google account: upload and open, steps in the file); also opens in LibreOffice
• No macros, no add-ons, no subscription
• Formulas are locked so you can't break them by accident; your cells are shaded
